This is Lovington
Welcome to Lovington, NM.
Resting on the edge of the Caprock, this New Mexican town provides all the simple comforts of a great American town. Despite its small population, its name is well-known throughout the state thanks to the many successes of its high school football team, the Lovington Wildcats. The Cats have won 17 state championships in the last 50 years. It’s no wonder then that LHS has produced an NFL star, Brian Urlacher, middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears.
Football isn’t the only interest of the residents of Lovington. Rodeo is another favorite past time. The Jack McClure Arena hosts several great events, but perhaps the most popular are the annual rodeo performances during the Lea County Fair & Rodeo. In fact, Lea County, of which Lovington is the county seat, boasts many National Rodeo champions such as Jimmie and Roy Cooper, Troy Fort and Jake McClure.
In 1908, the Jim B. Love Grocery Store was built, becoming the first store in Lovington. Early on Lovington life was built on farming and ranching. In more recent times, though, oil and gas have become major driving factors in the local economy.
Oil, cattle, crops….what really puts the “loving” in Lovington are the people. Walk into Bob’s Thriftway and you’re sure to meet several friendly faces eager to lend a helping hand when needed. With a low crime rate and an affordable cost of living, it’s easy to concentrate on the important things here, like family and friends. The slow pace of small town life gives the opportunity to enjoy each passing moment. Whether you spend it playing dominoes at the Senior Citizen Center or fishing with the kids at Chaparrel Park, you’ll be thankful to be able to call this place home.
